You are as powerful and strong as you allow yourself
to be, and…the most difficult part of any endeavor
is
taking the first step, making the first decision.”

If I were to distill down the consensus from the participants
about PowerPlay, it would be this: “wonderful workshop,
glad to have participated; got enormous value from it
. . . could have put the learnings to even better use
if they'd come earlier in my career.” The participants
suggested that PowerPlay be integrated into the corporate
on boarding or training in the early stages of their
career.

“I want to take this opportunity to say ‘Thank
you’ for
being a part of such a wonderful, engaging PowerPlay workshop.
I am grateful to Springboard facilitators for taking the
time to engrave in our minds the fact that we are leaders
in our own way. I really needed that extra punch and you
gave that to me today. I will take what I learned today
and practice on making whatever I want to happen...happen.”

In response to the growing need to build leadership skills
early in the experiences of women and women of color, Springboard’s
co-founders, Pamela Carlton and Kimberly Davis collaborated
with President Beverly Daniel Tatum on the design, development
and delivery of the Spelman College Center for Leadership & Civic
Engagement. The Center, launched on October 9, 2003, is
at the vanguard of preparing women for important leadership
roles, and through a research center of excellence, is
providing ground-breaking ideas to corporations and other
organizations on leadership challenges and opportunities. The
Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement, known as
Spelman LEADS, has five key areas of emphasis: Leadership
Development, Economic Empowerment, Advocacy through the
Arts, Dialogue across Difference, Service Learning and
Civic Engagement.
Designed as a research site, Spelman
LEADS is a place for discussion of contemporary issues
and their implication for public policy. It is an environment
where students learn from women who themselves have been
on the front line of business and social change in both
the private and public sectors. It is also a place where
the
financial
literacy and economic development of women of color are
promoted; where the transformational power of the artist
as community leader is embraced; where opportunities for
dialogue across difference abound; and where our commitment
to community service is enhanced and civic involvement
is inspired by example.
As a research institute and national
repository, Spelman LEADS has a unique perspective that
focuses on issues of local, national and global relevance,
and the ways in which these issues impact multicultural
women.
As the Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement
prepares leaders for the twenty-first century, it does
so with a clear vision of a workforce that reflects the
diversity of our world, fully embracing the notion of active
leadership and the pursuit of civic initiatives that are
of personal worth and public value. It is in this spirit
that Spelman LEADS serves to guide the actions and shape
the destinies of current and future generations of women
of color throughout the nation and around the world.
